The documents created with the different MS Office applications can be read from LibreOffice and modified using any of its tools, so compatibility is guaranteed.

All these tools are alternatives to Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and other components of the Office suite. LibreOffice includes a word processor, a spreadsheet editor, a presentation editor, a graphic editor, a mathematical formula editor and a database editor. Thus, LibreOffice was born, and the world was gifted with a suite that would continue to offer everyone a free and robust alternative to the main existing office suites. After Oracle purchased OpenOffice, a large part of its development community decided to create a fork of their own. To do so, I suggest you use fontist and follow the instructions here (disclaimer: I wrote those instructions).Microsoft Office may still reign king in terms of the most used office suites, but LibreOffice is an excellent free alternative that can easily compare to the popular toolkit. You can install the official 'Calibri' font from Microsoft.

You can also issue sudo apt-get install fonts-crosextra-* to substitute for other Microsoft fonts. It is however available in the official repositories and you can install it by running: sudo apt-get install fonts-crosextra-carlito This open-source font is called 'Carlito' and it is not installed by default. Install an open-source replacement for 'Calibri'. By the default Kubuntu 20.10 installation, fontconfig will resolve the missing 'Calibri' to 'Noto Sans', an inappropriate substitution, which lead to this bug. You can find it out by yourself using the command fc-match. LibreOffice will tell you that the font is missing and has been substituted by putting the font name in italics, but it will not tell you which font was used as a substitute.

If a font is missing, fontconfig will use a substitute font. LibreOffice uses fontconfig to resolve fonts. The bug, which I reported here, is related to a missing font, 'Calibri', a font by Microsoft which is missing on Ubuntu.

I will post the solution here as I think it is important for people who comes from Windows and want a smooth experience with Linux.
